Every Second Home in Helsinki to Receive a New Electricity Meter as Helen Electricity Network Launches Replacement Programme for 230,000 Meters

Helen Electricity Network has launched one of Finland’s largest electricity meter replacement programmes. During 2026 and 2027, around 230,000 electricity meters will be replaced across Helsinki, affecting approximately one in every two homes and small businesses in the city.

The replacement programme began in eastern Helsinki in August and will be rolled out gradually across the city.

The meters being replaced are approaching the end of their technical lifespan and will be substituted with a new generation of remotely readable electricity meters. The new meters meet upcoming legislative requirements and enable more accurate measurement of electricity consumption.

“This is a major upgrade that will be visible across Helsinki over the next two years. Around every second connection point will receive a new electricity meter,” says Mika Nousiainen, Metering Manager at Helen Electricity Network.

The new meters record electricity consumption in 15-minute intervals and provide more detailed information on electricity use. Customers will be able to monitor their consumption more accurately and make use of data from the meter’s HAN port, for example in home energy management systems or for controlling electric vehicle charging. The meters also enable electricity retailers to offer control services for electric heating systems.

At the same time, electricity use in Helsinki is changing. The electrification of transport, heating and other services is increasing demand for electricity. More detailed metering data helps the distribution system operator monitor network performance, identify anomalies more accurately and plan network development in line with changing needs.

“As the electricity network evolves, we need increasingly detailed information on electricity use and network performance. The new meters support this work and help us ensure a reliable electricity supply in the future,” Nousiainen says.

Replacement is free of charge for customers

The electricity meter replacement is provided free of charge to customers. An individual installation typically takes around 15 minutes, during which there will be a short interruption to the electricity supply.

Customers will be informed of their replacement appointment in advance by text message or through a notice displayed on their building’s notice board. The replacement work is being carried out by Elvera, an authorised contractor of Helen Electricity Network.
