Electricity metering
Electricity metering is the responsibility of the electricity network, so you do not need to take care of it yourself. Helen Electricity Network measures electricity consumption at approximately 450,000 metering points in Helsinki using remotely read meters that automatically collect consumption data.
Please note that installation and modification work related to electricity meters must always be ordered by a qualified electrical professional.

Remotely readable meters and consumption data
Remote-read electricity meters automatically measure your electricity consumption and transmit the data to our systems without the need for manual meter readings. Helen Electricity Network uses the metering data for electricity distribution billing and forwards it to your electricity supplier for energy billing purposes.
Remote reading enables electricity connections and disconnections to be carried out remotely. Electricity is connected and disconnected automatically in accordance with the validity of your electricity contract. If you have received a text message regarding the connection of your electricity supply, please follow the instructions provided in the message.

Replacement of meters
We are replacing electricity meters in phases during 2023–2028. The replacement is carried out based on the service life of the meters, starting with the oldest ones.
By the end of 2024, approximately 120,000 meters had been replaced across Helsinki. In 2026–2027, we will replace an estimated 230,000 meters. In the same building, not all meters are necessarily replaced at the same time. You will be informed about the meter replacement in advance when it becomes relevant to your metering point.

Meter replacements are carried out area by area in phases and are communicated as the work progresses. The meters being replaced are Landis+Gyr E350 meters, and the replacements are carried out by our partner Elvera. The meter replacement is free of charge for the customer, and you will receive a next-generation electricity meter with a HAN port, enabling even more reliable electricity consumption measurement.
If your electricity meter is located inside your home, Elvera will agree on an installation time with you. For meters located in housing company common areas, information will be provided by letter and text message. Please follow the instructions you receive and act accordingly.
The meter replacement is a quick procedure and usually takes about 30 minutes. During the replacement, the electricity will be temporarily switched off. Before installation, please ensure that there is sufficient space in front of the meter for safe working, and that your access details and contact information are up to date. If an individual meter is not replaced, for example in an apartment building, consumption data may need to be estimated if the remote reading connection is interrupted.
In metering points where the network product is time-of-use distribution, a relay installed in the meter is available for controlling, for example, electric heating. Load control is switched on with a random delay between 10 pm and 11 pm and switched off at 7 am. However, the night-time price period for time-of-use distribution starts at 10 pm.
The smart electricity grid benefits electricity users and helps enable renewable energy solutions. Next-generation electricity meters provide more real-time information about your electricity usage. Through the HAN (Home Area Network) interface located in the meter cover, you can access a data package updated every 10 seconds, for example to optimise electric vehicle charging.
The meter cover includes an RJ-12 connector, which you can use to connect your own device for receiving data. The HAN port is activated by Helen Sähköverkko Oy, after which data can be retrieved from the port at 10-second intervals. Activation of the interface is free of charge.
Electricity meters with HAN port
Meters equipped with a HAN port have been installed since the beginning of 2023, and all meters will be equipped with a HAN port by the end of 2030. In connection with meter replacements carried out by Helen Sähköverkko Oy, you will receive a meter with a HAN port at no additional cost.
HAN port activation
You can activate the HAN port in Oma Sähköverkko.
In Finland and across Europe, the electricity market transitioned to 15-minute settlement periods on 1 October 2025. After this change, electricity consumption and production are measured and priced in 15-minute intervals. This means you can monitor your electricity consumption at a quarter-hour level.
The background to this change is EU regulation requiring EU Member States to move to 15-minute balancing settlement periods. The aim is to harmonise electricity market rules and to better balance electricity production and consumption. This is particularly important due to the changing energy production structure, which includes more renewable and weather-dependent generation. 15-minute intervals improve the balancing of production and consumption, thereby increasing the overall efficiency of the electricity system.
Quarter-hour metering requires a compatible electricity meter. Responsibility for meter replacements and upgrades lies with local distribution system operators, in Helsinki Helen Electricity Network. We began replacing meters in 2023 and are gradually transitioning all remaining meters to quarter-hour metering, no later than 2028.
