Metering

Metering installation and alteration work must always be ordered by an electrical professional.

Remotely readable meters

In connections and cuts of electricity related to the start and termination of electricity contracts, electricity can be switched on or off remotely. Electricity is connected and disconnected automatically according to the validity periods of the electricity contracts. If you have a contract that has started and you have received an SMS about connecting electricity, follow the instructions behind the link below.

Replacement of meters

Replacement of meters

We started the extensive renewal of meters in 2023, and nearly all current meters will be replaced by the end of 2029. The technical service life of electricity meters is approximately 15 years, and the replacement has started with the oldest meters. By the end of 2024, approximately 120,000 meters will be replaced across Helsinki, and approximately 240,000 meters will be replaced during 2026–2028. There may be meters of different ages in the same property, so not all meters are necessarily replaced at the same time.

Information on meter replacements

The residents of the areas are informed of the replacement of meters as the replacement process progresses. Meter replacements are carried out by our partner Eltel Networks. If the electricity meter is located in your home, Eltel Networks will agree with you on the time of installation. If the electricity meters are located in the housing company’s public premises, Eltel Networks will inform you of the meter replacement by letter and SMS. We recommend that you follow Eltel Networks’ announcements about the replacement of meters and act according to Eltel’s instructions.

Replacing the meter is a simple procedure and the installation visit takes about half an hour. The meter replacement causes a short power outage.

To ensure a smooth replacement of the meter, please make sure that there is enough free space in front of the meter for the electrician to work safely. It is also necessary to make sure that the property's access information and the contract person’s mobile phone number are up to date. If an individual meter is not replaced, such as in an apartment building, the metering data of this meter will probably need to be estimated when the remote reading connection is lost.

Further information

A relay installed in the meter is available for controlling electric heating, such as at delivery sites with time-based distribution as the distribution product. The load controls are switched on with a random delay between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. and switched off at 7 a.m. However, the night-time distribution price of time-based distribution starts at 10 p.m.

The smart electricity network benefits electricity users and helps to build readiness for renewable energy solutions. The new generation of electricity meters provides even more real-time information about your own electricity consumption. Via the HAN (Home Area Network) home automation connection located in the meter cover, you can use a data package updated every 10 seconds to optimise, for example, the charging of electric cars.

There is an RJ-12 connector on the meter cover to which you can connect your own device to receive data. The HAN port is activated by Helen Electricity Network, after which data is sent out from the gate in 10-second cycles. Activation of the interface is free of charge.

Below you can read Sesko’s recommendation for the local H1 customer interface for electricity meters and check the list of data sent. You can use the contact form to request activation of the HAN port.

Meters with HAN ports have been installed since the beginning of 2023 and all meters will be equipped with HAN ports by the end of 2030. You will receive a meter with a HAN port free of charge in connection with meter replacements carried out by Helen Electricity Network. If you want a meter with a HAN port earlier, please contact us via the
contact form. In this case, we will charge a fee in accordance with the service price list for the replacement of the meter.

Questions about meters and their replacements

You can change the question with arrow keys and open and close the answer with space key.

Our partner Eltel Networks will inform the residents about the meter replacement.

Please read the announcements you receive and act according to the instructions in them. This will ensure that the replacement of your electricity meter goes smoothly.

Aidon 7534 (three-phase metric):
Height 264 mm, width 170 mm, depth 86 mm

The installation of a new meter takes about half an hour.

The replaced electricity meters were installed in the early 2000s and have reached the end of their service life.

The new electricity meters provide more accurate information on electricity consumption and enable the development of smart electricity network services.

For safety reasons, we did not connect electricity because an electrical device was switched on. Please make sure that all electrical devices are switched off at the time of the connection. Items left on the stove or sauna heater, for example, pose a fire hazard.

Please note! You are responsible for safe connection.

When you are at the delivery site, you can connect the electricity yourself by replying "Helen K" to the text message.

If your electricity meter is located in your apartment, the main switch must be in the I position in order to connect to the meter. If you do not want to connect electricity via SMS or have questions about remote connection, please contact our customer service on 09 617 8010, open 24/7. You can find the price of the call here.

The noise is related to the automatic operational check of the remote switching or remote switch-off device of the Landis&Gyr-branded meter. The check is performed once a day and the time of day depends on when the remote switching/switch-off device was last used or when the meter was disconnected from the power supply.

The checking time is moved approximately five minutes earlier each day. The time of the click can be moved to a time that suits you, either by briefly switching off the electricity using the control button on the meter or the main switch in the apartment. In this case, the next operational check takes place 24 hours later.

Remote readable meters meter electrical energy with high accuracy. The meters are subject to very strict technical requirements and have a high level of data security. The metering equipment is tested at the factory and in field conditions before installation begins. Remote reading also allows the automatic condition monitoring of the meters, which means that faulty meters can be replaced quickly.

If you suspect a fault in your electricity meter, you can ask to have the meter checked. The inspection is carried out by Helen Electricity Network’s metering service provider. Please note that if we determine that the meter is working correctly, we will charge an inspection fee in accordance with the service price list. You can use this form to order an inspection visit.

The easiest way to monitor your electricity consumption is through our reporting service Oma Sähköverkko.

The free service allows you to monitor the energy usage of your home, undertaking or property even hourly. It helps you to plan and reduce your energy consumption. The electricity consumption is also shown on the display of the electricity meter.

Under the Electricity Market Act, Helen Electricity Network is obligated to arrange the metering of electricity supply and remote reading of meters that form the basis of the balance statement and invoicing in our electricity network.

Under normal circumstances, we use accurate hourly or fifteen-minute resolution metering data read from electricity meters via remote connections to fulfil this obligation.

However, there may sometimes be disturbances in the remote connections of electricity meters which prevent the transfer of metering data from the meter to our systems and the metering data according to actual consumption is missing. Disturbances can be caused, for example, by a broken communication module in the electricity meter or a more extensive fault in the communication network.

If metering data is missing, the distribution system operator must estimate the consumption data for the missing period. The estimate must be made no later than 5 days after the incident, unless the metered values have become available. We estimate consumption data based on the site’s previous usage profile, taking into account, for example, the outdoor temperature, day of the week and public holidays.

Even if there are problems with the electricity meter’s remote connection, the meter still measures the consumed electricity all the time and the metering data is stored in its memory. We will read the metering data from the electricity meter’s memory as soon as the remote connection is restored, and the estimated consumption data is almost without exception replaced with metering data based on actual consumption. We also automatically send the metering data to the electricity supplier for adjusting the billing.

If the customer’s network service invoice has been created based on the estimated consumption data, it will be adjusted retroactively for the entire estimated period in connection with the next invoice. This does not require any action from our customers.
